Templo de la Candelaria was built in 1706. Its terra cotta colored facade opens to an awe inspiring golden altar. I do not know who they were trying to impress but 300 years later it is still absolutely stunning and effective because they completely impressed me. At the same token, the immense wealth that was sunk into creating this work of art came from the hardworking Maya who were stuck in the peonage system, slaves to the land, their labor created the fortunes that built this beautiful temple and Merida.
In front of the temple sits a gated courtyard housing a statue to the temples most memorable leader, Monseñor Norberto Domínguez.
